Weighing only 2,880 pounds, the 1957 Corvette® "Fuelie" was not the first car to be built with a fiberglass body, but it was the first to come from one of the big automobile makers. Perhaps this fiberglass flier’s biggest claim to fame was the fact that it introduced one of General Motors® Corporation’s most revered engines--the 283 cubic inch V-8. When General Motors® modified this power plant with fuel injection, the engine produced an unprecedented 283 horsepower--capable of going from 0-60 mph in under six seconds. Additionally, it was the first car to combine fuel injection with a 4-speed manual gearbox.
Aside from the lightweight design and mind-boggling performance capabilities, the 1957 Corvette® was one of the most handsome automobiles ever built. The automobile chosen to pace the prestigious Indianapolis 500® race has always been considered the best that automotive technology can offer. In 2006 a Chevy® paced the race, for a record 17th time. For the 2006 running the Chevrolet® in question was the Z06 Corvette®, and it's the eighth time for a Corvette® to be leading the pack The fabulous Z06 was based on the C6.R Corvette® racer that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four out of the previous five years.
The 2006 Corvette® Z06 Pace car is virtually identical to the models available to the public. The production Corvette® is so racing-ready that it can handle the rigors of pacing with very few additions necessary. In fact, the only changes made to prepare it for pacing were the addition of strobe lights and racing safety gear. The Z06 with its 505 horsepower is capable of 198 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. It has sophisticated aerodynamics, a suspension that can handle 1.01 Gs in for cornering and large 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels that are a foot wide in the rear.
Pace cars are expected to endure strenuous use. For example, during the last four Indy 500® races, the Chevy® pace vehicles led the field for a combined 186 laps of the total 800 laps driven. That's 2,000 miles! It's no wonder that the high performance 2006 Corvette® Z06 was eminently suitable for pace car duties. For the 2006 race the Pace car featured a patriotic red, white and blue theme. Graphics included an abstract U.S. flag pattern with "Victory Red" and "Cobalt Blue" ribbons flowing across the car with white stars flanking each side. The Americana graphics were more than appropriate for this most famous of high performance American cars.

The 1965 Corvette® was in many ways the alpha omega of Corvettes®. 1965 introduced the first GM® factory big block option for any Corvette®. The powerful 396 Turbo Jet engine delivered 425 hp and 415 foot-pounds of torque. This was a quantum leap from previous years, with 375 hp the highest option offered in 1964. With this new factory muscle under the hood, the '65 Corvette® was just as much at home on the track as the street. In fact, most who purchased this option drove their Corvettes®... a quarter mile at a time! The 1965 Corvette® was also the first year to offer the new "bulge hood," designed for the big block option, and the first Corvette® to have side exhaust pipes and a power radio antenna. The 1965 model year was also the omega Corvette®. It was the last "fuelie" Corvette®. 2007 was also the first year since 1998 that GM offered replicas of the Indy 500® Pace Car to the public.
